Raising a Punk Rock Child

Raising a punk rock child or infant is much like raising any other child, with one slight twist. Most of the punk rock genre tend to place the utmost importance upon individuality, and not conforming to what society deems "moral" or "normal". While you are trying to raise a child with a need of sense of self, it is still important that you use guidelines and discipline. All children need guidance and structure to become responsible, and well adjusted adult; however that doesn't mean that they need to conform to the latest trend.

The first key to raising a punk rock or any alternative child, is to not give up your own sense of self during pregnancy or after the birth of your child. Instead you should embrace yourself as a whole, and enjoy your accomplishments. This is not to say that your party life shouldn't be toned down a notch or two, as you will be receiving more responsibility upon the arrival of your child. During pregnancy, many women loose sight of their past self. While two to three years ago, it may not have been easy to find punk or alternative clothing for your new shape; these fashions are now readily accessible, and can help you to maintain yourself as a whole.

Children learn by emulating their parents, chances are if you are a punk or another alternative style parent; your child will begin walking in your footsteps. In addition you may wish to dress your child in an edgy onesie or t-shirt, which will allow him or her to express themselves at such a young age.

In punk culture music plays a vital role, which makes it important to expose your child to this genre of sound. Instead of playing a trendy or a society standard cd, try popping in your favorite punk cd, or turn on your mp3 player to boot! I found that the music that I played most often during pregnancy, has a much larger chance of being enjoyed by my own daughter; so as I stated so many times before it is never too early to teach them the love of music.

While many children will enjoy the punk rock lifestyle, some may be inclined to follow the trends. If this isn't your cup of tea, I may suggest allowing your child to choose their own clothing. Nothing screams "mainstream" more than formulating your child's clothing, and forcing your views upon them. It is important to their self worth, and their impressionable psyche that you allow them to make educated choices. This day and age, it is important to treat your child with respect and not to down play their intelligence. Speaking to them in coo's and ga's will not help to stimulate the brain, it isn't only important for any child to be educated; but the free spirit nature of the punk rock community almost demands it.

Lastly, you should enjoy your time with your child; even the smallest of tasks such as choosing an outfit for the day can help your bond grow stronger. Allow your child to spend time with his or her favorite punk rocker!
